It has been 20 years since I moved from my native Israel to the United States to pursue my dream of a career in music. During that time I have been very fortunate to find success as a composer & music editor for film and television. While I love film music, I realized that I had spent my entire career working on music for other people - the purpose of my work was always to serve the filmmakers. And so I decided to commemorate my 20th year since beginning this adventure by producing an album of original music written for no other reason than the unadulterated love of music.
I've always been drawn to, and intimidated by writing for solo instruments. When writing for an orchestra, there are so many colors and textures to play with, not to mention the sheer energy such a large group puts out, that it seems like there is plenty to hide behind compositionally as long as the piece is well orchestrated. But when writing for a solo instrument or a chamber group like a string quartet, there is nothing to hind behind. The spotlight is on the singular voice. It's like being under a microscope. Every note, every phrase, every pause, every nuance is magnified by the absence of anything else. As a composer, I find it exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. It forces me to bring forth my very best effort, agonizing over each detail, second and third guessing myself, writing and re-writing.
I feel like I owe it to the musicians to write music that engages them and challenges them creatively and technically. I want them to feel fulfilled by the experience of playing these pieces. I feel like I owe it to you, the listener, who is giving us your time and attention, to not let you down. I want you to be entertained, to enjoy the experience, and to be moved by it as I am moved by music that I love. Strange as it may seem, I feel like I owe it to the instruments themselves to maximize how i use them. It's almost like they are living creatures of which I am asking a lot, and need to give just as much back in return.

As you might guess from the title, this is strange and eerie synth music meant to conjure a mystical film where all is not what it seems. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 14, 2023
